Amen to Poetry!!!! And LPG’s Poetics Class

A few things. First Local Poets Guild is offering a very informal no-homework poetics class on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of every month from noon to 2 pm. We meet at the community room at my building, Silver Gardens, and read essays aloud and discuss them. Everyone is welcome. If you RSVP to me at nearartexperience (@) yahoo (dot) com , I’ll send you pdfs of the articles in advance so you can print them and also give you a phone number to reach me so I can let you in the building which has security. Each session we read a chapter of Richard Hugo’s Triggering Town (until done) and two other essays and discuss them. Our next meeting, on March 11th, we’ll do a Hugo plus a Louise Gluck essay, and then we’re going to mix things up and have a speaker talk about his own poetics and stance on craft and aesthetics. Our guest is John Amen.

John Amen is the author of three collections of poetry: Christening the Dancer (Uccelli Press, 2003), More of Me Disappears (Cross-Cultural Communications, 2005), and At the Threshold of Alchemy (Presa, 2009). His collaborative work with Daniel Y. Harris, The New Arcana, will be released by NYQ Press in September 2012. His work has appeared in numerous journals nationally and internationally and been translated into Spanish, French, Hungarian, and Hebrew. In addition, he has released two folk/folk rock CDs: All I’ll Never Need (Cool Midget 2004) and Ridiculous Empire (2008). He is also an artist, working primarily with acrylics on canvas. Further information is available on his website: www.johnamen.com. Amen travels widely giving readings, doing musical performances, and conducting workshops. He founded and continues to edit The Pedestal Magazine (www.thepedestalmagazine.com).

Before he joins the poetics group, he’ll be featured at Sunday Chatter, and then Monday March 12th, he’ll be our feature for East of Edith open mic. We hope he has a great visit to New Mexico—and hope you’ll join us for some of these events. Here is his full itinerary…
